BREAKING: Sierra Leone Minister Of Power, Sesay Resigns
Sierra Leone’s Energy Minister, Alhadji Kanja Sesay, stepped down on Friday, according to a statement from the president’s office.
The move came amidst a backdrop of frequent power outages that have plagued the country’s electricity supply.
The reasons behind Sesay’s resignation were not explicitly stated, and the energy ministry declined to comment when approached by AFP.
However, the development follows the government’s payment of $18.5 million to two power providers, Turkish Karpowership and Transco-CLSG group, just hours earlier.
President Julius Maada Bio has taken direct control of the energy ministry, with two other officials assisting him.
The move is seen as an effort to address the country’s energy crisis, which has seen power outages persist for months.
Karpowership, which has been supplying electricity to Sierra Leone since 2018, had reduced its capacity from 65 megawatts to just five megawatts due to payment issues.
The payment of $18.5 million is part of a larger debt of $40 million owed to the power providers.
The development raises questions about the connection between Sesay’s resignation and the payments, as well as the future of Sierra Leone’s energy sector.
