BREAKING: FCT Teachers Initiate A Strike Action, Three Days To End Terminal Exams
Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have initiated a new strike in response to the failure of the area councils to comply with the new minimum wage of N70,000.
This strike action has disrupted the first-term examinations, with students being sent back home instead of taking their tests.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time that primary school students in the FCT have been affected by teacher strikes, causing interruptions to their learning.
The current strike follows a previous one that occurred earlier in the term, lasting for about three weeks before being called off.
The Nigeria Teachers’ Union (NUT) in the FCT, Kubwa chapter, led by Chairman Comrade Ameh Baba, has highlighted the ongoing issue of unpaid arrears by the area council chairmen.
He further explained, “And now the ultimatum of December 1st deadline given by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for any state to comply with the minimum wage of N70,000 has come into effect. Hence, we don’t have any option but to comply.”
Despite the approval of the new minimum wage by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, the teachers are still awaiting payment, particularly the UBEC teachers who have not yet received the approved salary increment.
Comrade Ameh Baba has emphasized that the teachers will persist with the strike until they are paid the outstanding N40,000 peculiar allowance and N35,000 wage award that have been owed to them for up to a year.
The situation remains unresolved as teachers advocate for fair compensation and fulfillment of financial commitments by the governing bodies.
