Anambra: We Have The Highest Number of Cases per Judge in Nigeria, Second Only to Lagos — Soludo

Anambra State’s judiciary is grappling with one of the country’s heaviest case loads per judge, second only to Lagos State, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has revealed.
The governor made this assertion during the 88th birthday celebration of retired Justice Godwin Ononiba, former Chief Judge of Anambra State, where a book titled “Wisdom On The Bench: The Enduring Legacies of Godwin Ude Ononiba” was also unveiled.
Governor Soludo praised the dedication of judges in Anambra State, describing them as the most hardworking judges in the country.
“We are here to celebrate Justice Ononiba and what he stands for. When I see people of his ilk, I remember the institution they are leaving behind for us. He is a hardworking man, and I want to say that Anambra has the most hardworking judges in the country.”
According to him, “In Anambra, we have the highest number of cases per judge in the country, and this is only after Lagos.”
He further acknowledged the vital role of the judiciary in upholding justice and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing adequate support for judicial officers.
“We are calling on the judiciary to continue to help us to maintain justice in the country. We will continue to celebrate Ononiba and people in their level.”
To tackle the mounting case load, the Soludo administration has initiated various reforms to enhance judicial efficiency.
To further alleviate the burden on the judiciary, Governor Soludo appointed two high court judges, Etomike Ndigwe and Tagbo Anieto, in February 2023.
During their swearing-in ceremony, he reiterated that Anambra ranks “second to Lagos in terms of productivity” and pledged to enhance working conditions within available resources.
