Ondo Government Refutes Cocoa Farmers’ Claims of Land Sale to Private Company

The Ondo State Government has dismissed accusations from cocoa farmers in Odigbo Local Government Area who protested the alleged sale of their farmland in Oluwa Forest Reserve to a private firm, which they say led to the destruction of their plantations and displacement.

The farmers staged a protest on Sunday against SAO Agro-Allied Services Limited and the state government, accusing them of destroying their farms under orders from Mr. Ayo Sotinrin, former CEO of the agro-allied firm and current Managing Director of the Bank of Agriculture.

However, Mr. Ebenezer Adeniyan, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, clarified that Mr. Sotinrin was not involved in the land acquisition, stating, “Allegations implying that he is using a private firm to seize farmlands are malicious, unfounded, and a clear attempt at character assassination.”

The government explained that SAO Agro-Allied Services operates under a Public-Private Partnership approved since 2021, with all activities conducted under government supervision and in compliance with legal procedures. “None of its activities involves the unlawful takeover of legally secured farms,” the statement said.

It was also revealed that some farmers had violated agreements by occupying more land than allocated and encroaching on protected forest areas without permission, raising environmental and security concerns. The government maintained that all actions taken were lawful and supported by court rulings and legal advice.

Furthermore, the government exonerated Rotimi Akinsola, Senior Special Assistant on Agribusiness, from allegations of land grabbing, highlighting his role in managing commercial agricultural investments that aim to create jobs and increase state revenue. The statement described the accusations as politically motivated and baseless.
