Nasarawa State Government Partners with Security Agencies to Eradicate Illegal Mining

In a robust move to combat illegal mining, Nasarawa State has forged a partnership with security agencies to ensure that illegal miners across its 13 local government areas cease operations or face legal consequences. This initiative responds to the state House of Assembly’s concerns about the detrimental effects of illegal mining activities, particularly in Kokona LGA.

During a press briefing in Lafia marking the two-year anniversary of Governor Abdullahi Sule’s second term, Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Ibrahim Tanko, announced the government’s zero-tolerance stance. “The state government has declared zero tolerance for illegal mining,” he said, highlighting the goal of eliminating illegality from the mining sector.

Tanko pointed out that illegal mining endangers the environment and natural resources, while also hurting legitimate miners who comply with regulations. “Illegal mining not only poses a significant threat to the environment and natural resources in the state but also undermines the livelihoods of countless indigenous miners who abide by the regulatory framework,” he explained.

The Commissioner emphasized the need to protect mineral-rich communities from unregulated operators and urged mining companies to follow legal licensing procedures. “Any mining company coming to Nasarawa State has to go through the necessary processes,” Tanko stated.

The government’s collaboration with security agencies is already active, focusing on identifying and prosecuting illegal miners. Tanko commended Governor Sule’s efforts since 2019, particularly in attracting investors and creating jobs in the mining sector.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to monitoring mining sites and shutting down those that violate state laws. “We are committed to ensuring that the right thing is done,” Tanko said.

In addition, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Yakubu Kwanta, praised the governor for approving the construction of mini-stadia in the state’s senatorial districts and congratulated the state’s athletes for winning 18 medals at the National Sports Festival, encouraging continued discipline and dedication.
