17-year-old boy tortured to death for stealing in Kogi (Graphic/Video)
Police Command in Kogi State have arrested nine members of the state vigilante services for torturing a 17-year-old suspect to death.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP William Aya, who confirmed the arrest told journalists on Tuesday in Lokoja that the incident occurred on Monday 9 March, at Ofabo in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.
Explaining the incident, DSP Aya said that the victim known as John Omale reportedly stole some items belonging to one Igbo trader.
He said the owner of the goods reported at the office of the Kogi State vigilante services in the area that the suspect stole his N200,000 worth of goods.
The chairman of the vigilante was said to have ordered that the suspect be tortured in his presence which resulted to his death. Reacting to the development, angry youths of the community went on rampage and burnt shops, houses belonging to Igbo traders.
Houses in the community, beer depots as well as the office of the Kogi State Vilgilante Service and that of their Commandant, Ojodomo Benjamin were set on fire.
DSP Aya said that the command has started severe investigation into the incident.
