La Liga Calls Super League ‘Selfish, Elitist Model ’
La Liga, the governing body of Spanish football, has strongly criticized the ruling by the European Court of Justice that UEFA and FIFA violated EU law in blocking the formation of the Super League.
La Liga described the Super League as a “selfish and elitist model” that goes against the principles of fair competition.
Real Madrid and Barcelona, the two most powerful clubs in Spain, have continued to support the Super League, but La Liga remains opposed to the idea.
“Today, more than ever, we reiterate that the ‘Super League’ is a selfish and elitist model,” La Liga posted on X, formerly Twitter.
“Anything that is not fully open, with direct access only through the domestic leagues, season by season, is a closed format.”
The European Court of Justice’s written judgment clarifies that its ruling does not mean that the Super League is automatically authorized to go ahead.
Instead, the court has found that UEFA and FIFA have been abusing their dominant position in the football market.
“The FIFA and UEFA rules making any new interclub football project subject to their prior approval, such as the Super League, and prohibiting clubs and players from playing in those competitions, are unlawful,” it ruled.
In response to the court’s ruling, A22 Sports, the company behind the Super League project, has claimed a major victory.
“We have won the right to compete. The UEFA monopoly is over. Football is free,” the firm’s CEO Bernd Reichart declared in a social media post from the A22 account.
