Veteran German Footballer Is Dead
Legendary German footballer Franz Beckenbauer has passed away at 78 years old.
Beckenbauer was a two-time World Cup champion, winning as captain in 1974 and as manager in 1990.
‘Der Kaiser’ is one of only three men to have won the World Cup as both a player and a manager, an achievement that solidifies his place in football history.
Beckenbauer is joined in this exclusive club by Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and France’s Didier Deschamps.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that my husband and our father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family.
“We ask that you be able to grieve in silence and refrain from asking any questions,” a family statement reads.
