AFCON 2023: Ghana Sacks Head Coach, Houghton After Competition Exit
Chris Hughton has been dismissed as the coach of Ghana following the early exit of the Black Stars from the Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana failed to secure a victory in any of their three group-stage matches in Cote D’Ivoire, earning only two points and finishing third in Group B.
The Ghana Football Federation released a statement on Tuesday announcing that the decision to sack the Englishman was made by the executive council.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior national team with immediate effect.
“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.
“The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars,” the statement read
Despite the possibility of qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams, Ghana’s chances were dashed when Cameroon defeated The Gambia 3-2 on Tuesday, confirming the Black Stars’ elimination from the tournament.
