President Biden Wins South Carolina Democratic Primary
United States President, Joe Biden has achieved a decisive win in the Democratic primary in South Carolina.
With the majority of ballots accounted for from the vote on Saturday, he has garnered all 55 pledged delegates.
As reported by the BBC’s US partner CB, this election marks the initial official Democratic primary leading up to this year’s presidential election.
Biden, who faces minimal competition within his party, has expressed determination to defeat Republican Donald Trump and ensure his loss in the upcoming election.
He has attributed the revitalization of his 2020 campaign to the support of South Carolina voters and has voiced confidence in their ability to propel him towards winning the presidency in 2024.
The preliminary results show that Democrats Marianne Williamson and Dean Phillips lagged far behind Biden, each securing only 2% of the votes.
With over a quarter of the population in South Carolina being black, it was the state’s black voters who played a significant role in securing Biden’s nomination bid in 2020 by delivering his first victory.
“You’re the reason I’m president,” Biden told a mostly black crowd in the state in January.
“You’re the reason Donald Trump is a loser, and you’re the reason we’re gonna win and beat him again.”
President Biden advocated strongly for changes in his party’s rules to position South Carolina as the initial state for voting in the nomination process.
A Biden campaign adviser indicated to the BBC that this strategic move aimed to ensure that the nomination process reflected the diversity of the Democratic party.
