MMA, Lagos Welcomes Back 3.9km Runway
The 3.9km 18R/36L runway at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMA, Lagos, has been reopened by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Originally closed in April 2023 for an eight-week maintenance period, the runway encountered delays that extended its closure to almost a year.
Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of FAAN, had expressed optimism that the runway could be reopened sooner than initially anticipated.
She highlighted efforts to facilitate the resumption of operations and called upon the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to expedite the reopening procedures.
In response to this, FAAN collaborated with the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) and the NCAA to ensure the swift reopening of the runway.
“We are working closely with the contractor. With the support of the minister and permanent secretary, we are aiming for a swift reopening,” She had said.
Kenya Airways was greeted with a water cannon salute upon landing on the runway, symbolizing its return to service.
