Niger Workers To Begin Indefinite Strike Today
The organized labor in Niger State has declared an indefinite industrial action set to commence on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.
In a letter directed to the Niger State government via the office of the Secretary to the State Government, jointly signed by the state NLC chairman, Idris A.
Lafene, and the TUC state chairman, Ibrahim Gana, the labor group stated that the strike will continue until all outstanding issues between them and the government are resolved.
The labor union has demanded the reversal of all political appointments for Executive Directors of Finance, Operations, and Administration in agencies.
They also called for the reversal of appointments for chairpersons, members, and permanent commissioners of the Local Government Service Commission and Civil Service Commission, as well as appointments of agency directors-general.
Other demands include “a clear statement by the government on payment of wage award.”
Furthermore, the organized labor cautioned against the appointment of unqualified civil servants as permanent secretaries while urging the government to retract the appointment of a vice principal on secondment as a permanent secretary to encourage career advancement from within.
Additionally, the labor group warned the state government against victimizing teachers and members of the educational sector in response to the recent incident in Agaie Primary School where a pupil was accused by the government of using vulgar and violent language against the federal government during a debate.
“We wish to formally inform the government that effective 8am on Wednesday, the 21st February, 2024, Niger State workers shall commence an indefinite strike action until our demands are comprehensively met,” the memo read in part.
