BREAKING: IGP Orders Stoppage Of POS Operators From Police Stations Across Nigeria
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has given an order to cease the use of Point-of-Sales (POS) machines and other electronic mobile money transaction tools in police stations and other police facilities across the country.
The directive, communicated by the police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, is aimed at upholding the integrity and security of police operations. The ban is also intended to prevent potential corruption and to eliminate the possibility of criminal activities infiltrating police Commands or Formations under the guise of financial transactions, thereby maintaining discipline within the Force.
The top police official emphasized the strict enforcement of this directive, indicating that any Command or Formation found violating the order would face serious consequences.
Both police officers and POS operators involved in disobeying the directive would also bear severe repercussions.
The statement read,”Despite previous directives, it has come to the attention of the Force leadership that some Commands and Formations continue to flout this regulation.
“As such, the IGP warns that any violation of this ban will attract severe sanctions on the leadership of the affected Commands and Formations.
“The IGP notes that the use of electronic payment devices within police facilities poses significant risks, including the potential compromise of sensitive information, financial irregularities, and the facilitation of illicit activities, therefore, strict adherence to this directive is non-negotiable.”
The Inspector-General of Police further urges all officers and personnel to adhere to this instruction without exception.
“Any law enforcement officer or POS operator found disobeying the directive or participating in illicit financial dealings will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary and legal actions in line with existing laws and regulations. Additionally, the leadership of the Command/Formation will be held accountable for any violations within their jurisdiction,” the statement concluded.
