BREAKING: Lagos Court Remands Emefiele In EFCC Custody Over Abuse Of Office
In a Lagos State Special Offences Court session held in Ikeja on Monday, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, was remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after being arraigned for alleged abuse of office.
Following Emefiele and his co-defendant Herry Omoile pleading not guilty to a 26-count charge related to abuse of office brought by the EFCC, Justice Rahman Oshodi issued the remand order.
Emefiele is to stay in custody until Thursday when the judge will review his bail application.
Meanwhile, Omoile was remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services.
Before the court’s decision, Emefiele’s lawyer, Abdulakeem Ladi-Lawal, requested that his client be granted bail on self-recognition or the most lenient terms.
He also asked for the same bail conditions previously granted by Justice Hamzat Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja and suggested that Emefiele be released to his lawyers while fulfilling the bail terms.
The EFCC’s lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, did not oppose the bail application but urged the judge to set conditions that would ensure the defendants appear in court for their trial.
