Meta Reverses Trump’s Facebook And Instagram Ban
On Friday, Meta announced the lifting of restrictions on Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, which were initially suspended following the violent events at the US Capitol in 2021.
It said that “former President Trump, as the nominee of the Republican Party, will no longer be subject to the heightened suspension penalties.”
After his supporters stormed the Capitol, Trump’s accounts were indefinitely suspended due to his perceived support of the violence on social media.
Although his accounts were reinstated in February 2023, there were still penalties in place for potential future violations.
“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis,” Meta wrote in a blog post.
“He remain subject to the same Community Standards as all Facebook and Instagram users, including those policies designed to prevent hate speech and incitement to violence.”
However, Meta decided to remove this additional restriction on Friday.
Former President Trump faced bans from other major platforms like Twitter and YouTube in the aftermath of the Capitol incident.
Although these bans were eventually lifted last year, Trump has relied heavily on his own social media platform, Truth Social, for communication.
His Facebook profile, boasting 34 million users, now features updates originally shared on Truth Social, along with invitations to events and campaign videos.
Despite being the first former president to be criminally convicted, Trump continues to engage with his audience through various online channels.
