Students Demand Reversal of Telecom Tariff Hike, Threaten Protests

The South-West zone of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) has demanded that the Federal Government immediately rescind the recent increase in telecommunication tariffs. The student body warned that failure to do so would result in widespread student mobilization and protests.
In a press conference held in Lagos, NAUS also called upon the government to address other critical issues affecting university students, including escalating insecurity on campuses, unreliable power supply, and persistent academic strikes.
Tiamiyu Olayinka, the NAUS National Vice President (South-West), emphasized the necessity of affordable internet access for students in the digital age. He stated, “Students across campuses depend on affordable internet access to attend virtual lectures, conduct research, submit assignments, and participate in online discussions. By increasing telecom tariffs, these critical academic engagements are being disrupted.”
He further urged relevant authorities to take immediate and responsible action to resolve these pressing concerns. “Failure to meet up with our demands will leave us with no choice than to mobilise students across South-West and take a bold step to defend our rights and secure a better academic environment for all,” Olayinka concluded.
