Tension Ahead: Police Urge Protest Organisers to Reschedule April 7 Demonstration

The Nigeria Police Force has appealed to the leaders of a planned nationwide rally set for Monday, April 7, to abandon the event, branding its scheduling as “inappropriate” and possibly “provocative.” Organized by the Take-It-Back (TIB) Movement to spotlight pressing national issues, the demonstration falls on the same day as the inaugural National Police Day, sparking a firm rebuke from authorities.

In a Sunday press release, Force spokesperson ACP Muyiwa Adejobi condemned the timing, hinting it might be a calculated move to discredit the police and Nigeria’s image. The federal government recently established April 7 as National Police Day to celebrate the force’s role, aligning with international traditions.

“Choosing this date for a countrywide rally casts doubt on the organizers’ motives,” Adejobi stated. “It could be viewed as a disrespectful gesture that jeopardizes the reputation of the Nigeria Police and the nation.”

The police encouraged the TIB Movement and prospective attendees to delay the rally and opt for constructive discussions instead. The statement underscored the force’s pledge to safeguard democratic rights while promoting “established avenues” for voicing concerns.

Led by Inspector-General Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force stressed its resolve to uphold lawfulness and engage peacefully with civic groups. Still, the advisory signals potential friction as the rally date looms.

The TIB Movement has yet to comment officially, leaving it unclear whether they will push forward. As National Police Day debuts on April 7, the situation could escalate into a clash between law enforcement and activists.
