VIDEO: Tragedy as Billboard Crushes Tricycles, Injures Passengers in Aba

A large billboard collapsed in Aba, Abia State, on Wednesday, crushing several commercial tricycles and injuring many passengers. The tragic event unfolded at the bustling Salad Market junction near the GIA Event Centre during a heavy rainstorm with violent winds.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the billboard fell without warning, trapping tricycles and their occupants beneath the debris. Emergency services and local engineers quickly mobilised to rescue the victims, with many injured individuals rushed to nearby hospitals. Some fatalities were also reported, though authorities have not yet provided official figures.
The collapse also brought down high-tension power lines, leaving the area without electricity. Residents are expected to remain in darkness until repairs are completed.
Structural engineers at the scene blamed the collapse on substandard construction and inadequate soil testing, especially given the billboard’s strategic location. Nine tricycles were reportedly trapped under the fallen structure, and the incident has prompted calls for stricter regulatory oversight and regular safety inspections.
Relatives and bystanders were seen mourning at the site, highlighting the emotional impact of the disaster. The incident underscores the urgent need for improved safety standards for public infrastructure in Nigeria.
