Delay Persists in NIN Registration for Inmates at 256 Custodial Centres, Report Confirms

A comprehensive report has brought to light that, despite being authorized five months ago, the registration of inmates for National Identity Numbers (NIN) has not started across Nigeria’s 256 custodial centres.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) had approved the move in January 2025, following an appeal from the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche. The aim was to integrate inmates into the national database, thereby supporting development plans and strengthening security.

Nwakuche, during a visit to NIMC’s Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, in Abuja, stressed that the NIN registration would address inmates’ exclusion from national programmes and bolster internal security. He also noted the system would be invaluable for identifying and recovering escaped inmates.

However, insiders reveal that the process is still in the preparatory stages, with logistical challenges yet to be fully resolved. NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar stated, “Work is in progress. Don’t forget we have about 256 custodial centres across the federation, and it will take time to ensure all inmates are key to the system.”

The report highlights the ongoing efforts to finalize arrangements before the project can be launched nationwide.
