In a move to honor Nigeria’s democratic progress, the Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to mark Democracy Day. The announcement came in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, speaking on behalf of the FG, congratulated Nigerians on 26 years of unbroken democratic governance. He remarked, “June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured.”

Tunji-Ojo reflected on the nation’s democratic evolution since 1999, highlighting the resilience and strength that have defined Nigeria’s political landscape. He emphasized that democracy is a continuous journey that depends on openness and the collective desire for improvement.

The Minister reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to upholding democratic values, stressing the importance of the people’s freely expressed will in shaping Nigeria’s development across political, economic, social, and cultural spheres.

Democracy Day was officially shifted from May 29 to June 12 in 2018 to honor the landmark 1993 presidential election, which was annulled but remains a symbol of democratic struggle.

He urged Nigerians to reflect on the day’s significance and to maintain their commitment to nation-building and democratic ideals.
