In commemoration of Democracy Day on June 12, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja. The day honors the June 12, 1993 presidential election, considered the most credible election in Nigeria’s history, which was won by the late Moshood Abiola but annulled by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida.

According to a statement by House of Representatives Spokesman Akin Rotimi, members have been formally notified of the special joint sitting through a memorandum from House Clerk Yahaya Danzaria. The session will start at 11:00 a.m., with preliminary proceedings preceding President Tinubu’s arrival and address at noon.

The theme for the 2025 Democracy Day celebration is “26 years of democracy: Renewing our commitment to national development.” President Tinubu will deliver a presidential address as the Special Guest of Honour.

The statement highlighted the significance of the occasion: “This joint sitting represents a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey. It underscores the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and advancing national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.”

The House urged all Nigerians to embrace the spirit of Democracy Day as a time for “reflection, renewed patriotism, and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.”
