Tinubu Cancels Military Parade, Opts for Nationwide Broadcast on Democracy Day

The Federal Government has officially announced the cancellation of the customary military parade that was to mark the 26th Democracy Day celebrations on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The decision to cancel the parade came without an official explanation.
In place of the parade, President Bola Tinubu will deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7 a.m. on the same day. This announcement was made on Wednesday by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day Celebration.
Later in the day, at 12 noon, President Tinubu is scheduled to attend a special joint session of the National Assembly. This session will focus on highlighting significant democratic milestones and ongoing government reforms aimed at consolidating Nigeria’s democracy.
The revised schedule was outlined in a statement signed by Abdulhakeem Adeoye, acting on behalf of the Director, Information & Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The statement reads:
“The Inter-Ministerial Committee wishes to announce the following developments on the 26th Democracy Day celebration:
1.Presidential National Broadcast on June 12, 2025, at 7 a.m.
2.No Democracy Day Parade.
3.H.E. President Bola Tinubu is to attend the National Assembly Joint Session at 12 noon.
4.Public Lecture on Democracy Day Celebration at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja. Time: 4 p.m
5.Theme: Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”
The committee further directed that the public lecture, which will take place at the State House Conference Centre, will be covered exclusively by accredited State House correspondents, ensuring focused media coverage.
