Why Abuja-Kaduna Train Derails Near Jere Station
An Abuja-Kaduna passenger train on Tuesday derailed close to Jere Station, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. No fatalities were recorded in the incident.
A video circulating online showed onlookers remarking that the train was fully loaded with passengers who were disembarking after the derailment.
Confirming the development, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said the train derailed between Kubwa and Asham stations.
In a statement signed by its Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, the NRC disclosed that emergency responders had been deployed to the scene to manage the situation.
Opeifa said: “NRC confirms a train derailment involving its Kaduna bound AKTS train service at about 11.09 at KM 49 between Kubwa station and Asham station.
“Emergency rescue, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals have already been mobilised.
“Full compliment of security already on ground as effort is ongoing to move all passengers on train back to Abuja safely. Kindly bear with us at this moment.”
The incident occurred just days after the NRC reported that one of the coaches on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) developed a hot axle a few kilometres from Rigasa Station in Kaduna.
