Tension As JAMB Officials Work Out On Lawmakers, See Why
There was mild drama at the National Assembly on Wednesday after representatives of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) staged a walkout during a session with the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, was absent and delegated a Director, Mufutau Bello, to stand in for him.
Trouble started when Bello demanded that journalists leave the meeting room, claiming the documents he was about to present contained sensitive information.
The Committee, however, declined the request, insisting that its sittings were public and that it was constitutionally empowered to determine how its proceedings were conducted.
In a dramatic twist, the JAMB representative became visibly upset, ordered his team to leave, and stormed out of the session — a move that left lawmakers astonished.
Infuriated by the action, the Committee instructed the Sergeant-at-Arms to arrest the JAMB officials, but they had already exited the premises.
The Committee has now summoned the JAMB Registrar to appear in person with his management team and submit all requested documents by next Tuesday.
It further warned that failure to comply could result in the issuance of a warrant of arrest.
