AFCON 2023: South Africa Put 4 Past Namibia to Keep Hope Alive
34-year-old Themba Zwane, who was once considered too old for international football, scored two goals as South Africa defeated Namibia 4-0 on Sunday to revive their Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
After losing to Mali earlier in the tournament, this victory was crucial for the South African team. Zwane’s goals contributed to a three-goal lead by halftime.
When Belgian coach Hugo Broos took charge of the team, he had criticized the team’s age, using Zwane as an example.
However, Zwane’s performance in this match proved otherwise.
South Africa’s Percy Tau converted a penalty, and Zwane scored his second goal, with Thapelo Maseko also finding the net in the second half. This win marked South Africa’s largest victory margin in the competition.
Mali currently leads the table with four points, while South Africa and Namibia have three each, and Tunisia has one. The final group matches will take place on Wednesday.
South Africa dominated the match, and Namibian goalkeeper Kazapua made a excellent save to tip a Morena shot over the crossbar just before halftime.
