The outgoing President of the United States, Joe Biden, made a significant decision on Friday by granting clemency to over 2,500 individuals who were convicted of nonviolent drug offenses.

This action is being recognized by the White House as the largest single-day clemency initiative in the history of the United States.

In his statement, Biden emphasized that the individuals whose sentences were commuted had been serving excessively long terms compared to the sentences they would likely receive today.

He portrayed this decision as a crucial step towards addressing historical injustices, rectifying sentencing disparities, and giving deserving individuals a chance to reunite with their families.

With this action, I have now issued more individual pardons and commutations than any president in US history,” Biden said.

Biden also suggested that he might consider issuing additional commutations or pardons prior to the transition of power to President-elect Donald Trump on Monday.

It is worth noting that just last month, he had already commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 people and granted pardons to 39 others.
