Brazilian Jazz Musician Hermeto Pascoal Dies At 89
Brazilian jazz icon Hermeto Pascoal has passed away at 89, his family confirmed on Saturday.
In a statement on Instagram, his family said he died “with serenity and love,” surrounded by relatives and fellow musicians. They noted that at the moment of his passing, Pascoal’s band was performing on stage, “just as he would have wished: making sound and music.”
Hailing from Alagoas in northeastern Brazil, Pascoal gained global recognition through his collaborations with jazz legend Miles Davis and other renowned musicians.
Some of his compositions were recorded by Davis, solidifying his status as a trailblazing figure in world jazz.
Widely regarded as a virtuoso, Pascoal was celebrated for his mastery of multiple instruments and his remarkable gift for improvisation.
Paying tribute on Instagram, Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso described him as “one of the highest points in the history of music in Brazil.”
