Benue Assembly Raised Concern Over Poor Medical Facilities At State Teaching Hospital
The deteriorated and inadequate facilities at Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, have been strongly criticized by the Benue State House of Assembly’s Committee on Health.
The committee expressed disappointment at the state of medical equipment and amenities under the former Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Terlumun Swende.
During an oversight function visit to the new CMD, Dr. Stephen Hwande, the Chairman of the Committee, Pharm Thomas Dugeri, raised his concerns about the significant decay that occurred during Dr. Swende’s tenure, emphasizing that it was unacceptable.
He further highlighted various issues identified during the committee’s visits to the institution, including an insufficient workforce, equipment deficiencies, problems with water supply, and challenges with electricity.
“We had demanded for the MoU and the partners for the radiology and the medical laboratory.
“But we are seeing things in a different dimension now. How did drugs worth over 200 million waste? How did these drugs come into the hospital? Even it had been given as a donation, it would have taken the hospital to heights.”
