Ogun Poly: Gunmen Invade Students, One killed, 9 Injured
Just four days after the Ogun State Police Command announced the arrest of three armed robbers involved in a robbery and rape incident at Gateway Polytechnic, Sapaade, the students have been attacked again, resulting in the tragic loss of one student’s life.
Additionally, nine other students sustained gunshot injuries during the recent robbery.
This latest attack occurred shortly after protests by students and locals against the previous robbery and rape incident targeting female students of the polytechnic.
The majority of victims in these robberies were students residing at off-campus hotels in nearby communities.
In response to the initial incident and subsequent protests, the institution’s management had temporarily shut down the polytechnic for three days to restore normalcy.
The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, also held a meeting with student leaders to address the growing tension in the students’ communities.
Following these efforts, the police announced the arrest of three armed gangs involved in the crimes.
However, in a disheartening turn of events, the suspected robbers returned to the troubled communities in the early hours of Saturday and targeted the students once again, this time in the Larufi area of Ode.
Videos circulating on Instagram depict scenes of destruction, with shattered doors, broken windows, and bullet-riddled walls.
Although two lecturers at the institution confirmed the attack, requesting anonymity due to the terrifying nature of the incident, regarded the operation “as a calculated operation.”
The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, did not respond to calls and messages from journalists.
The Head of Public Relations for the institution, Adedayo Folorunsho, declined to comment on the specific attack but emphasized the importance of allowing the security agencies to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
It is undoubtedly a deeply distressing situation, and it highlights the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect the students and faculty of Gateway Polytechnic.
The safety and well-being of students must remain a top priority.
