Paris 2024: Super Falcons Beats Lionesses To Secure Final Round
The Super Falcons of Nigeria secured their spot in the final round of the African qualifying series for this year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament thanks to Esther Okoronkwo’s 15th-minute goal at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, which proved to be the decisive moment in a tense 180-minute battle against Cameroon across two legs.
After a goalless 105 minutes (90 minutes in Douala and 15 minutes in Abuja), the Henan FC forward made the breakthrough.
Okoronkwo capitalized on a long pass from the defense, outpacing her markers and setting up captain Rasheedat Ajibade, whose shot was saved by the impressive goalkeeper Michaely Bihina, only for Okoronkwo to pounce on the rebound and finish expertly.
Cameroon ended the match with 10 players after Enganemben was sent off for pushing Nnadozie in a chaotic moment as Cameroonian players crowded the Nigerian goal.
Nigeria’s win now sets up an exciting final round clash with South Africa, the reigning African champions, in April.
