Buhari Praises Tinubu’s Progress at Midterm, Calls for National Support Amid Challenges

On the occasion of President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has praised the administration’s efforts while cautioning Nigerians to moderate their expectations. Buhari’s statement, released through his media aide Garba Shehu, underscored the importance of shielding “necessary reforms and desired changes” from the distractions of “nettlesome domestic politics.”
Acknowledging the hardships caused by inflation and poverty, which have disproportionately affected the poorest families, Buhari emphasized that these issues require collective action. “The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can,” he said, urging a collaborative approach to national development.
Under Tinubu’s leadership, the government has pursued a “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which includes the removal of petrol subsidies, currency liberalization, and the full repayment of a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan. While these reforms aim to stabilize the economy, they have also triggered a sharp rise in living costs, creating widespread economic strain.
In a show of political unity, the All Progressives Congress officially endorsed Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election on May 23, 2025. Buhari’s message concluded with a note of encouragement: “Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy,” he said, adding, “I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care.”
