Tinubu’s Growing Clout Evident as Gov Eno Leads Akwa Ibom into APC Fold

President Bola Tinubu’s strategic acumen was on display Friday as Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, formally joined the APC, further consolidating the party’s dominance. Eno’s defection, following closely on the heels of Delta’s Sheriff Oborevwori, brings the number of APC-governed states to 23.
This development leaves the PDP with 10 states and highlights the shifting allegiances among Nigeria’s political elite. Governors Fintiri, Mbah, Mutfwang, and the suspended Fubara are now under scrutiny for possible defections, as internal party dynamics continue to evolve.
Fintiri’s recent engagement with NSA Ribadu and Atiku’s meeting with his former rival Binani have stoked speculation. In Enugu, the PDP’s public defense of Mbah echoes earlier denials in Delta before Oborevwori’s switch.
During the APC national summit, Tinubu stressed that such political migrations are a hallmark of democracy. “I’m glad about what we have, and I’m expecting more to come. That is the game. We’re in a constitutional democracy,” he noted.
Governor Eno’s declaration, broadcast live and attended by top APC figures including Senate President Akpabio’s wife and nine governors, was a testament to the party’s growing appeal. Eno asserted, “We are not joining the APC from a position of weakness but from a position of strength.”
The move was not universally embraced, as Commissioner Ini Ememobong resigned, citing political principles. Eno, however, called for unity, stressing the need for loyalty and collective progress.
Akpabio, in a message delivered by his wife, encouraged Eno to remain steadfast in the face of criticism, while Uzodimma praised Tinubu’s leadership. Eno later registered as an APC member at his local ward.
The APC’s National Working Committee welcomed Eno, describing his defection as a significant gain for the party and Akwa Ibom. The PDP, meanwhile, has reserved comment pending further deliberation.
