AFCON 2023: Super Eagles Secures Round Of 16 After Edging Guinea-Bissau 1-0
Nigeria secured a spot in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau.
The Super Eagles had previously drawn 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea and secured a 1-0 win over Ivory Coast, positioning them on the cusp of qualification.
Despite their previous success, the three-time African champions faced a tough challenge against Guinea-Bissau, who occupied the bottom of Group A.
The crucial goal was scored in the first half, as Opa Sangante converted Simon Moses’ cross into the net.
While attempts from Victor Osimhen and Zaidu Sanusi were disallowed by VAR in the second half, Nigeria managed to maintain their lead and secure the three points.
Ultimately, they finished in second place behind Equatorial Guinea, who defeated hosts Ivory Coast with a 4-0 victory.
