Tobi Amusan Sets New African 60m Hurdles Indoor Record
At the opening leg of the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold in Astana, Kazakhstan, Tobi Amusan made history by setting a new African indoor record in track and field.
The 26-year-old athlete surpassed Glory Alozie’s previous record of 7.82 by clocking a time of 7.77 seconds in the event.
Amusan, who currently holds the world record for the 100m hurdles at 12.12 seconds, showcased her potential during the semifinals with a swift run of 7.91 seconds.
In the final, she further improved her performance, winning the event ahead of Nia Ali, the 2019 World outdoor champion, and Sarah Lavin from Ireland.
Amusan’s time places her second on the world top list for the season, just behind Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas who recorded 7.75 at the Corky Classics in Lubbock, Texas.
Additionally, her achievement has propelled her to the 20th position on the world all-time list.
By breaking Glory Alozie’s three African records, Amusan has solidified her status as the reigning Commonwealth Games champion and holder of multiple records including Nigeria, Nigerian Championships, African Games, African indoor, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and world records.
