Former South Carolina Gov Nikki Haley Defeats Donald Trump In Washington DC First Primary
Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has achieved a significant victory by surpassing former President Donald Trump in the Republican primary held in Washington DC.
This marks the first win over the former president in the 2024 race for the Republican presidential nomination.
Haley, even though she lost in her home state of South Carolina, has made history by becoming the first woman to win a Republican primary in US history.
Despite Haley’s victory, Trump maintains a substantial lead over her and is currently poised to potentially compete against Joe Biden in the upcoming November election, as per reports from BBC.
Reports from CBS, a US media outlet affiliated with the BBC, mention that Haley is set to acquire all 19 Republican delegates from Washington DC, totaling 43 delegates nationwide, far behind Trump’s count of 247.
Haley, a former US ambassador to the United Nations, secured an impressive 62.9% of the vote, compared to Trump’s 33.2%.
It is worth noting that this victory in Washington DC is largely symbolic given the city’s Democratic-leaning nature, with a relatively small number of registered Republicans, approximately 23,000 in total.
As reported by the Washington Post, a total of 2,035 Republicans took part in the primary, echoing the engagement seen in this race despite the challenging political landscape of the region.
Haley’s campaign national spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas said: “It’s not surprising that Republicans closest to Washington dysfunction are rejecting Donald Trump and all his chaos”.
The Trump Campaign, however, was quick to dismiss Haley’s win, calling her the “Queen of the Swamp”.
“While Nikki has been soundly rejected throughout the rest of America, she was just crowned Queen of the Swamp by the lobbyists and DC insiders that want to protect the failed status quo. The swamp has claimed their queen,” Trump Campaign press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said.
