Detained Binance Executive Escapes Custody – NSA Confirms
The National Security Adviser’s office has verified that Nadeem Anjarwalla, an executive at the cryptocurrency platform Binance, has absconded from detention.
Anjarwalla is a person of interest in the ongoing investigation by the Federal Government into the operations of the cryptocurrency exchange in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Monday through spokesperson Zakari Mijinyawa, the NSA office confirmed that Anjarwalla fled lawful custody on Friday, March 22, 2024.
“The Office of the National Security Adviser confirms that Nadeem Anjarwalla, a suspect in the ongoing criminal probe into the activities of Binance in Nigeria has escaped from lawful custody on Friday, 22 March 2024,” the NSA Office said.
Anjarwalla, who holds dual British and Kenyan citizenship and serves as Binance’s Africa Regional Manager, was undergoing legal proceedings in Nigerian courts related to Binance’s activities in the country.
He fled while subject to a 14-day remand order by the court and due to appear before it again on April 4, 2024.
The statement further mentioned that upon receiving the report, the NSA’s office promptly initiated actions, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, government departments, and the international community, to apprehend the fugitive.
“Preliminary investigation shows that Mr Anjarwalla fled Nigeria using a smuggled passport,” it said.
“The personnel responsible for the custody of the suspect have been arrested, and a thorough investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances that led to his escape from lawful detention.”
