WhatsApp Users With Two Accounts Will Soon Be Able To Switch Between Them On A Single Phone
WhatsApp users with two accounts will soon be able to switch between them on a single phone, changing the way many log into the messaging app.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of WhatsApp owner Meta Mark Zuckerberg, announced the new feature on Facebook – to a surprisingly positive response.
Until now, users with more than one account, such as a personal WhatsApp and work profile, have needed to use two phones.
The new feature will be rolling out to Android users in the coming weeks, with a release date for iOS to be confirmed.
A further statement from Meta added: ‘Today, we’re introducing the ability to have two WhatsApp accounts logged in at the same time. Helpful for switching between accounts – such as your work and personal – now you no longer need to log out each time, carry two phones, or worry about messaging from the wrong place.’
Users glad to finally have the option of more than one WhatsApp account per device voiced praise on social media – but were quick to point out the move was a ‘cheater’s paradise’, enabling people to run a secret account without needing a ‘burner’ phone.
The company also warned users to be aware of spoof WhatsApp apps.
Only use the official WhatsApp and don’t download imitations or fake versions as a way of getting more accounts on your phone,’ it said. ‘Your messages are only secure and private when using the official WhatsApp.’
The new feature comes a month after Meta also announced the app was undergoing a major redesign for Android.
Selected beta testers have already been given a peek at the new look, which will be unveiled as part of Android 2.23.13.16.
Early indications show a white top bar with a new typeface for the WhatsApp branding. The chat menu appears to show only the name of the contact or group, rather than a preview of the most recent message, and offers filters for ‘all’, ‘unread’, ‘personal’ and ‘business’.
A date for release is still to be confirmed.
