President Tinubu’s New Year Message Address

Esteemed Fellow Citizens,

I am filled with great joy as I extend a warm welcome to each and every one of you – regardless of age – to this fresh year of 2024.

Let us express our gratitude to the Almighty for His grace and kindness bestowed upon our nation and our lives throughout the year 2023 that has just passed.

Although the previous year presented numerous challenges, it was also marked by significant events.

It served as a transitional period for our country, witnessing a peaceful, orderly, and successful transfer of power from one administration to another.

This accomplishment represents another remarkable stride in our uninterrupted democracy of 24 years.

To the gracious people of our blessed nation, your faith in me was entrusted with a clear mandate to improve our country, revive our economy, restore border security, strengthen our struggling industrial sector, enhance agricultural production, increase national productivity, and pave the way for a future of national greatness that we and succeeding generations will forever take pride in.

The task of creating a better nation and ensuring that our Nigerian society embraces the welfare of all its citizens is the underlying reason why I sought to become your President.

It formed the core of my campaign message during the Renewed Hope campaign, and it was on this basis that you elected me.

Every action I have taken, every decision I have made, and every international trip I have embarked upon since assuming office on May 29th, 2023, has been carried out in the best interests of our nation.

During the past seven months of our administration, I have made several difficult yet necessary choices to rescue our country from fiscal catastrophe.

One such decision was the removal of fuel subsidies, which had posed an unsustainable financial burden on our nation for over four decades.

Another decision involved loosening the stranglehold on our foreign exchange system, a grip that had benefited only the wealthy and most powerful individuals among us.

Undoubtedly, these two decisions brought discomfort to certain individuals, families, and businesses.

I am fully aware that conversations and debates have centered around the escalating cost of living, the high inflation rate that now exceeds 28%, and the unacceptable levels of underemployment for quite some time now.

From the boardrooms at Broad Street in Lagos to the main-streets of Kano and Nembe Creeks in Bayelsa, I hear the groans of Nigerians who work hard every day to provide for themselves and their families.

I am not oblivious to the expressed and sometimes unexpressed frustrations of my fellow citizens. I know for a fact that some of our compatriots are even asking if this is how our administration wants to renew their h ope.

Silently, we have worked to free captives from abductors. While we can’t beat our chest yet that we had solved all the security problems, we are working hard to ensure that we all have peace of mind in our homes, places of work and on the roads.

Having laid the groundwork of our economic recovery plans within the last seven months of 2023, we are now poised to accelerate the pace of our service delivery across sectors.

Just this past December during COP28 in Dubai, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and I agreed and committed to a new deal to speed up the delivery of the Siemens Energy power project that will ultimately deliver reliable supply of electricity to our homes and businesses under the Presidential Power Initiative which began in 2018.

Other power installation projects to strengthen the reliability of our transmission lines and optimise the integrity of our National grid are ongoing across the country.
