BREAKING: INEC Releases Timetable For Ekiti Election

OnyxNews Nigeria reports that Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released timetable for Ekiti East Constituency 1 by-election.
INEC in a statement issued on Wednesday by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said the election will hold on March 20, 2021.
This online news platform understands that the constituency seat became vacant following the death of Adegbuyi Oluwajuwa Amos.
Okoye said political parties are expected to conduct their primaries between February 26 and March 3, adding that March 8 is the deadline for submission of list of nominated candidates.
According to him, INEC met on February 23 and deliberated on a number of issues, including the conduct of by-election into the vacant seat of Ekiti East Constituency 1.

He explained that: “the vacancy arose as a result of the death of Adegbuyi Oluwajuwa Amos, the member representing Ekiti East Constituency 1 and the subsequent declaration of vacancy for the constituency by Speaker Funminiyi Afuye.”
INEC however urged political parties to ensure their candidates meet the qualifications stipulated in the Constitution
“Parties must note that under Section 31(8) of the Electoral Act, a political party which presents to the commission the name of a candidate who does not meet the qualifications stipulated in the Constitution and the Electoral Act shall be guilty of an offence and on conviction shall be liable to a maximum fine of N500,000.00,” Festus Okoye added.
