Wike Blames Area Councils’ Chairmen Over FCT Teacher’s Ongoing Strike
The ongoing strike by primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has been attributed to the Chairmen of the six area councils by FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, Wike stated that the local council officials have failed to fulfill their responsibilities.
The strike, directed by the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, began on January 15 and is a continuation of a previous strike halted in 2023 due to issues such as non-payment of peculiar allowance and wage arrears.
“Recently the NUT has embarked on strike; it is not because of our fault, it is the Councils’ Chairmen’s fault because primary schools are under the purview of the area councils.
“Again, it will look as if the ministers are doing nothing, but that is not our responsibility,” Wike said.
The minister is now holding an emergency closed-door meeting with security agencies and the Chairmen in an effort to resolve the strike, stressing the importance of their active involvement.
“Council Chairmen should know that they must wake up to their responsibilities,” the minister added.
