On June 12, 2025, Democracy Day in Nigeria, protesters gathered in Ikeja, Lagos State, to express dissatisfaction with the nation’s governance. The demonstration, organized by civil society groups under the theme “End Bad Governance,” saw a robust police presence ensuring the protest remained peaceful.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, was reported to have addressed the crowd directly, reassuring them of their safety and the police’s commitment to protecting their right to protest.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer shared a video on his official X page, showing armed officers deployed at the protest site. He reassured the public: “Democracy Day celebrants and protesters at Ikeja Underbridge… Adequate security on the ground for celebrants and protesters alike. No cause for alarm. Your safety and security remain our priority. #LagosPoliceNG.”

The police command had earlier reached an understanding with 15 Civil Society Organisations to designate Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota as the only approved venue for protests in Lagos. This measure was designed to maintain order and reduce the risk of violence.

As Nigerians reflect on the importance of June 12, the day continues to serve as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for democratic governance and citizen participation.
